Delhi Unlock: Latest Updates

With the reduction in the tally of daily cases, deaths and positivity rates (now below one per cent), the national capital partially lifts restrictions, albeit from only certain sectors. After nearly two months of city-wide lockdown to ward off the second wave of Coronavirus, Delhi will unlock in degrees.

Despite few relaxations, CM Arvind Kejriwal announced the extension of the lockdown till June 14. While markets, malls and offices will be commencing all activities; restaurants, theatres, gyms, bars, salons and other entertainment services are still prohibited from opening. Police will be deployed extensively across the city to ensure COVID-19 protocols and safety measures are being followed.

“Many economic activities have restarted in Delhi from today. However, take all precautions to protect yourself from Coronavirus — wear masks, maintain social distancing, keep washing hands. There is no room for any laxity. One has to stay away from Corona [virus] infection and also bring the economy back on track” CM Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi. (as translated by India Today)

As per the circular issued by Delhi government, standalone shops, malls, and market complexes will resume operations from June 7 with some curbs as part of the unlock. Shops in markets and malls can run from 10:00 am to 08:00 pm on an odd-even basis, whereas standalone shops can remain operational on all days. Liquor shops have not been barred either, and will also function basis the odd-even rule.

Offices

Offices in the city have been sanctioned to start operations, too. For government offices, Grade A officers can function with full strength, while officers of a lower Grade will work at a 50 per cent capacity. The state government advises private offices to continue working from home, however, they too can function with 50 per cent staff.

Factories and construction sites have already been exempted from lockdown restrictions, as of May 31. Self-employed workers like plumbers, electricians and carpenters are also permitted to work as per the DDMA order. E-commerce will recommence as well.

Delhi Metro

City metro gears up yet again after an inactivity of 30 days. Only 50 per cent of the trains will be utilised and their frequency will range from five to 15 minutes, depending on the line. Although the eight-coach train can shuttle up to 2,400 passengers, only 250 people will be permitted to board one rail during the unlock, with no standing passengers whatsoever.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation stated that services in full strength will be resumed on June 9. However, they request citizens to only travel if necessary. Stringent safety norms will have to be necessarily followed inside trains and stations.
