Triptii Dimri: The Breakout Bulbbul

Be it slaying patriarchal norms or re-enacting classic romances with ease, bright-eyed newcomer Triptii Dimri has already silenced audiences with powerful lead roles, especially as Bulbbul in the eponymous Netflix film. Ready to conquer the screen once again, the model-turned-actor from Uttarakhand gets candid about her struggles, travels, and memorable journeys.

How did you foray into acting?

[caption id="attachment_112567" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]Triptii Dimri (Location: Triund Trek, Himachal Pradesh)[/caption]   I never planned to be an actor. I was just a regular college-going student in Delhi. My brother's friend, who was trying his hand at photography, offered to do a test shoot for me, to which I said yes. He himself sent those pictures to a modelling agency in Delhi. They went through my pictures and liked them for print shoots. [However], I realised I didn’t enjoy print shoots, so I told my agency I would love to try acting. [I requested them to] send me to a few auditions. So that's what they did! They sent me for every audition—TV serials or commercials. That’s how I bagged my first-ever television commercial for Santoor.   I came to Mumbai in 2015-2016 and auditioned for Poster Boys, which was my first film— not many people know of it. After that, I was able to convince my parents that I wanted to stay in Mumbai and try my luck in acting. They gave me one year. That was it! I would go for at least five to six auditions every day. I finally got Laila Majnu after six years. That's how it began.

You played strong female leads in Laila Majnu and Bulbbul, both. Was this a conscious decision?

[caption id="attachment_112581" align="aligncenter" width="683"]Triptii Dimri (Location: Mukteshwar, Uttarakhand)[/caption]   I was really lucky with Laila Majnu. I wasn't going to audition for it since I had already auditioned in 2016 and was rejected then. My friend was auditioning for it in 2017 and I happened to be there with her. That's when the casting director asked me to try. I was in the right place at the right time! I was not trained in acting back then. It’s only after Laila Majnu that I went for workshops. The film introduced me to acting.   I got Bulbbul purely on the basis of my audition. At that time, I didn't realise what it is going to be like today. I liked the script, and honestly I didn't have too many options to choose from at that time.

Do you think audience perception towards female characters has changed over the years?

[caption id="attachment_112550" align="aligncenter" width="683"]Triptii Dimri (Location: Triund Trek, Himachal Pradesh)[/caption]   I think it has definitely changed and gotten better. A lot of movies from the 60s and 70s were based on women with strong female leads. After a point, they stopped making women-driven films, but I am glad that we are finally back on track. We are looking at a story as a story, and not [just] as a business prospect. I am glad that I am an actor now; I am getting scripts that are female-driven and there is a lot for me, as an actor, to contribute to a film. That's all that matters.   With OTT, content has taken over.

Tell us about growing up in the mountains of Uttarakhand. What was your childhood like?

I was born and brought up in Delhi, but my parents are from Uttarakhand. Every summer, we went to Uttarakhand so we could get to know our culture, and meet people from our village. I’ve spent so much time in Uttarakhand as a kid that I feel a special connect with the mountains.

What were some of your favourite spots in New Delhi during your graduation days?

[caption id="attachment_112552" align="aligncenter" width="683"]Triptii Dimri (Location: New Delhi)[/caption]   I was a student of Sri Aurobindo College, Malviya Nagar so I’ve spent a lot of time at Malviya Nagar Main Market. There was a DDA park next to our college which was, and still is, beautiful. There’s a path through the park that takes you to a fort

You’ve done treks in Triund (Himachal Pradesh), Mukteshwar (Uttarakhand) and Mawryngkhang (Meghalaya). What was the experience like?

[caption id="attachment_112555" align="aligncenter" width="683"]Triptii Dimri (Location: Mawryngkhang, Meghalaya)[/caption]   The experience is always beautiful! In fact, I live for these experiences. Every time I go for a trek or to a new place, I find that there is so much to learn, observe and cherish. I forget all my problems when I am travelling as it gives me a sense of freedom. I love that I get to meet different people. It allows me to look at life very differently. I feel truly blessed to have a profession that involves a lot of travel.

Any trekking destinations you’d recommend to our readers?

[caption id="attachment_112562" align="aligncenter" width="683"]Triptii Dimri (Location: Mawryngkhang, Meghalaya)[/caption]   There are many! My first trek was to Triund in Himachal Pradesh, and I think that it is the best place to start because it’s an easy one.   Recently, I was in Meghalaya for work and decided to extend my trip for two days because I wanted to go for the famous Bamboo Trail. I had seen a lot of videos on YouTube and heard that it’s one of the scariest treks in India as the path is made only of bamboos and ropes. There is no concrete ground for you to walk. It’s scary, but once you complete the trek, you feel amazing. I feel it’s worth giving a shot!

Any destinations you’ve discovered (or rediscovered) because of work?

There are many! Every time I travel for shoots, I make sure to step out and see what the place is like. While I was in Kashmir for Laila Majnu, I made sure to cover most of Kashmir—Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Doodhpathri. My co-actors and I would step out on off days and just go for long walks.

What kind of traveller are you?

[caption id="attachment_112563" align="aligncenter" width="683"]Triptii Dimri (Location: Mukteshwar, Uttarakhand)[/caption]   I am an impromptu traveller. I don’t believe in rigorous planning [since] that just makes me feel restricted. So whenever I travel with friends or family, we just pick up a destination and the rest is mostly unplanned. I also don’t carry a lot of things with me because I shop a lot wherever I go.

Destinations and experiences that are on your bucket list?

[caption id="attachment_112566" align="aligncenter" width="683"]Triptii Dimri (Location: Mukteshwar, Uttarakhand)[/caption]   I want to [learn] scuba diving; it’s something that has been on my list for a long time! This year, hopefully, I’ll get to go scuba diving in Andamans or somewhere outside India. I also want to go to Switzerland, and on a cruise to Alaska!   Related: Armaan Malik: The Melody Man
