Editor’s note: The global COVID-19 crisis has left each one of us deeply affected and we want to help. Burda Media India has organised a fundraising campaign to #FightBackWithTesting and donating RT-PCR test kits to the worst-affected areas in India, which will be secured from our testing partner Mylab Discovery Solutions. You can help these kits reach many more by donating for the cause or by adopting a kit. Click here to join the fight.

When the world is collectively going under a metamorphosis, it’s only natural for the World’s Best to do the same, but with a glimmer of positivity attached to it. That’s why The World’s 50 Best Restaurants – an annual ranking of the top 50 best restaurants and bars around the world – has initiated the ’50 Best for Recovery’, a support programme with a fund-raising drive at its heart. For the past 18 years (and counting), The World’s 50 Best Restaurants have highlighted the leaders of the dining industry, celebrating global chefs and delicious foods from around the world. However, the current situation has forced many of these restaurants to bring down their shutters, rendering chefs without any jobs. This stagnation has led the culinary industry, and by extension – a halt to the The World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ list as well.

In an attempt to keep these big names afloat, the brains behind the annual ranking have launched 50 Best for Recovery – a support programme underlined by fund-raising. As per their website, the recovery funding will be made possible through an extensive network of non-profit organisations which will then facilitate the process of survival. So far, their website also states that 50 best and its partners – led by S.Pellegrino, Acqua Panna and Perrier – have contributed to the 50 Best Recovery Fund.

Towards the latter half of June, 50 Best is expected to launch a ‘Bid For Recovery’ auction site as per a report on their main website. Here, diners can bid for experiences and foods donated by the 50 Best chefs, and even stand a chance to book a bespoke session post the pandemic. In doing so, bidders will not only be pampered with memorable experiences but will also play a role in helping the culinary industry get back on its feet.

Apart from the recovery fund, 50 Best is also slated to publish an e-cookbook titled Home Comforts: simple lockdown recipes from the world’s best chefs and bartenders. This downloadable book will come at a small price, proceeds of which will be used as a donation. Alternatively, food and drink lovers can even choose to engage in online social media contests called #50BestRateMyPlate. For this, budding chefs and mixologists can show off their culinary skills inspired by the Home Comforts cookbook, which would then be judged and featured on the 50 Best’s social media feeds.

Of the many plans conceptualised by 50 Best, the inception of two online Recovery Hubs can be added to the mix as well – one each for restaurants and bars. Through this, they will be gathering and generating advice, information, and inspiration for the respective industries to soar high again. Moreover, those who require further information for those looking to give back to the hospitality sector will also be provided here.

The Recovery Hubs will lead its way towards the Recovery Summit which will be spread throughout the month of September. It will consist of events such as masterclasses, talks, case studies, interviews and discussion forums, all while also bringing the global gastronomic community together virtually.
