Shimla’s Best Gulab Jamuns Are Back, Thanks To The All-New Baljees

One of Shimla’s most iconic restaurants, Baljees is making a much-awaited comeback after a short break. The landmark establishment for food lovers has revamped its décor, setup and even location. The place, however, retains its delectable food, warm experience, and of course, the popular gulab jamuns. By Kumar Shree

Serving culinary delights to Shimla residents and travellers, alike, for over 60 years now– Baljees is an unforgettable name in Himachal Pradesh’s culinary map. And especially so, for its delectable Gulab Jamuns. Their Gulab Jamuns have even enticed the taste buds of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Reports claim that PM Modi was a frequent visitor at Baljees when he was the BJP in-charge of Himachal Pradesh.

When one of the oldest restaurants on The Mall road went for an unprecedented break, it came as a shock to its many fans. However, Baljees is making a comeback after two years. This time, it’s coming up at a 50-room resort in Mashobra-Shimla, under Regenta Hotels. While the restaurant comes with multiple upgrades, the good-old food stays the same.

Chander Baljee, the Chairman and Managing Director of Royal Orchid Hotels Limited said, “Himachal is a key state for our expansion in key tourist cities like Kasauli, Manali, Mashobra, Shimla and Dharamshala.”

Since the restaurant is making a comeback in the post-COVID-19 world, strict safety measures have been implemented. The brand, through its Saftey Assured programme, defines all safety parameters for its guests and staff. These parameters are in strict compliances with ICMR and WHO guidelines to guarantee a hassle-free and safe dining experience for its guests.

Underlining that Gulab Jamun was one of the most popular dishes at Baljees, the new establishment has brought the same chef on board to continue with the legacy. Not just that, but the restaurant has retained many other favourite offerings from its old menu to evoke a sense of nostalgia among visitors.

Before it went on a break, the legendary restaurant was one of the oldest restaurants on Mall road and raced to popularity after being established in 1954 by Chandra Baljee.
