Head To These Breweries In India For Some Deliciously Chilled Beer

Craving something fizzy and cold to wash away the arduous stresses of a long work day? Check out these 9 breweries in India for a carefree fiesta. By Naina Atri

Hang loose at these 9 breweries across India

Bangalore is perhaps best known for its pub culture, which may make it difficult for any one brewery to stand out. However, with carefully selected hops, grains and malts, Windmills serves some of the best pints in the country. Their Indian Pale Ale definitely tops the list, for it is packed full of flavour. As live jazz plays in the background, peruse through their collection of art books and sip on their freshly brewed beer. Their food menu parallels their beer one – the Bacon Salad and Vanilla Creme Brulee are some of the crowd favourites.

The key to Toit‘s success is hearty, wholesome beer, free of chemicals, colouring agents, artificial flavouring or preservatives. Their craft beer concoctions celebrate local ingredients, which are then paired with classic pub-style comfort food, from a juicy beef burger to a more diminutive barley salad and the decadent rich dark chocolate cake. We suggest ordering the uber-popular Toit Weiss or its close second, the Tintin. The brick walls, warm lighting and buzzing ambience come together like puzzle pieces and form just the right vibe.

With three locations across Mumbai, the love for the Doolally Taproom is undeniable. Along with its beer, its attraction is that it’s pet-friendly (they also serve pet-friendly meals!). Play some board games, sip on their Apple Cider Beer and gorge on their crunchy kaffir fried chicken or house fries!

This list could not go one without mentioning Mumbai‘s first microbrewery, with authentic handcrafted beer, which you can see being made in their copper-coloured machinery behind the bar. The Barking Deer’s in-house beers – Flying Pig Belgian Wit, Bombay blonde, bark IPA, honey bee braggot, fallen angel chocolate stout – have all lead to the spot having a loyal set of beer-enthusiasts. The bar is also stocked with pints from around the world, along with innovative cocktails with quirky names like the ‘car bomb’. They always have some sort of a deal going on through the week, making it a fun post-work haunt.

With a variety of wheat beer that won’t break the bank, Open Tap at Gurugram’s Sohna Road is the place to be for a light-hearted session of drinks with friends. The playlist of pop music, usually from the iconic Y2K era sets the mood and makes the spot the right watering-hole for the nonchalant.

There’s just something about the experience of sipping on a chilled beer in a rustic pub that a chic bar is unable to capture. The Manhattan Bar & Brewery is all about unabashed entertainment. It isn’t rare to see crowds yelling while a soccer or a cricket match plays on their large screen. The brewery is all about keeping the blood pumping, hence the bar exchange. The rush of watching prices go up and down is quite thrilling, but if that isn’t your idea of fun, the brewery has a lot of games on offer. And when you’re tired from all that adrenaline, quench your thirst with their freshly-brewed beer.

Eclectic and eccentric, The Drunken Botanist‘s whimsical green front is unmissable at CyberHub. Great service, good food and beer (both local and imported) – what more could one ask for? And there’s plenty on offer for those who’re aren’t as besotted by beer. You could ask the bartender to surprise you (it’s on the menu) or try out their takes on classics like the sidecar or the colada, made Mysore style.

This German-esque brewery in Gurugram has delicious beers on tap, mouthwatering food and stunning Instagrammable interiors. If you aren’t in the mood for a loud night, then Michigan Taps may be the brewery for you. Dig into their Norwegian Salmon or Australian Lamb Chops, which go perfectly well with their beers (the darker you go here the better).

First started in 2014, Effingut Brews has spread its brand throughout Pune, Kolkata and Mumbai. The bar has eight beers on tap, artisanal ciders and meads, and the kitchen is oriented towards complex Indian flavours, with a dash of Oriental as well. If you want something strong, try their Hefty Braggot or if you want something more punchy, try out the citrusy Gooseberry Sour.
