Mumbai gets a new outpost in Lower Parel named Chin Chin Chu. By Karishma Sakhrani
Sometimes it can be a tall order to expect a high quality dining experience without too
much fuss, and a bill as long as a phone book from the eighties. But on a recent Sunday
afternoon, I discover Chin Chin Chu and I feel the need to reweave my thinking. If you ever
find yourself traversing through Lower Parel, I’d highly recommend penciling in lunch here.
The vibe is cheery, the menu is inviting and it’s a great spot for a quick catch up, midday meetings or even a big fam jam!
The menu was an extensive compilation of Asian favourites including dim sum, sushi,
bao and several known suspects amongst appetisers and larger plates. I usually dislike long menus, but this felt like an Asian fiesta, compelling me to order at least half the menu. I had convinced myself that lots of small plates and cocktails go well with the Sunday brunch vibe that I had adorned.
The sushi and sashimi were the stars of my table. The quality of the fish was good and the
plump rolls were crafted with a fine balance of rice and stuffing. I went for the whole hog and got a big boat of sushi, which I cleaned up with no extra effort. Chin Chin Chu has nailed the classic dim sums. The Edamame & Truffle Oil dim sum, and the Crispy
Prawn Cheung Fan get the most votes from me. There wasn’t much room for mains, but the selection was good enough to tempt me to order ramen bowls, curries and more.
By now, I was glad I left room for dessert because the desserts truly dazzled and stole the show. A good meal quickly turned in to a great one! The light and airy coconut mousse with coconut ice cream tasted as dreamy as it looked. Since it was clearly a binge day, I went all out and ordered two other desserts without any regrets. The tiramisu at Chin Chin Chu posed stiff competition to its counterparts at any Italian restaurant in the city (maybe better than some). The dish’s modern avatar didn’t compromise on flavour, a problem that usually occurs when there’s a strong focus on plating and presentation. Next, my compulsion for always needing a dose of chocolate forces me to squeeze in indulgent bites of The Forbidden Fruit — a classic combination of dark chocolate and berries.
What I loved the most about Chin Chin Chu, was its versatility. Whatever the occasion, time of day, or mood, you can squeeze in a quick bite and walk out happy. Or, you can even make your way through half the menu (like I did) and walk out happier!
