When In West Bengal, Relive The History Of The Colonial Era At The Denmark Tavern

Drawing inspiration from Danish architecture and designs, Denmark Tavern stands as a proud reflection of heritage and history from the colonial era.

Once a Danish trading outpost called Frederiksnagore, today The Denmark Tavern is located outside the village of Serampore in West Bengal. Dating back to 1786, the hotel has been restored from ruins to become a luxurious six-suite property. Its décor remains distinct with Danish design-inspired furniture and artefacts completing the look. The Denmark Tavern, as it stands today, is a proud reflection of its rich heritage.

Some of the popular dishes are Chicken & Mushroom Tart, Chicken Schnitzel, and special Bengali selections. For desserts, leave space for European and Bengali sweets and enjoy the goodness of both worlds.

For party lovers, The Denmark Club awaits. This well-stocked bar opens into The Hooghly Balcony and The Hooghly Terrace. Complete with an opulent setting, the bar serves a selection of drinks and delectable food. In addition, the Denmark Club also houses a mini library, board games, cards, and a brand-new pool table that will transport you to the beginning of time.

Explore

The Denmark Tavern

At The Denmark Tavern, you can enjoy different experiences. For instance, you can explore Serampore, a historic colonial settlement on the Hoogly River, and soak in its fascinating history and culture. Some of the well-known attractions in Serampore are Radhaballav Mandir, one of the oldest temples built in red sandstone; Henry Martyn’s Pagoda, a shrine with an interesting history; and the Soshan Kali Mandir.

You can also travel to the town of Bandel and Chandennagore, which were established by early Portuguese settlers. Even today, Bandel retains its historic charm, courtesy of the many landmarks and monuments. Begin your  day by visiting the Basilica of the Holy Rosary, one of West Bengal’s oldest churches; and then venture further to the Hangseshwari Mandir. Spend your evening in the charming French town of Chandennagore by visiting the museum; an underground house, Patalbari; and the Chandennagore Strand, a walkway along the Hooghly River.

If you’re searching for a novel approach to explore the area, take a relaxing boat ride across River Hooghly to Barrackpore, India’s oldest cantonment and police training academy. And end the day by retiring back at The Denmark Tavern, you key to cosiness, heritage, and historical experiences—perfect for the Danish concept of hygge.
