One of the first things that come to one’s mind on hearing Indore’s name is its famous poha. The light and tasty snack is a staple breakfast for Indorewalahs. Spicy Indori sev and coriander leaves are used for garnishing, while lemon is sprinkled to give the dish a tangy taste. Head Sahab Ke Pohe, in the Old Palasia area, has its own version of the dish, called usal poha. The small roadside eatery is flocked by hundreds during the morning hours.

Sabudana Khichdi at Sawariya Seth

Indore knows how to make the simplest of Indian recipes interesting. Sabudana khichdi is a case in point. The humble fasting dish is served here in a new avatar. All they do is add a mix of crunchy namkeens and a lot of spices. Lemon does its own trick and the dish is ready to serve. Sawariya Seth is the best place to savour the dish. They have several outlets in the city, but the most famous one is in Sarafa Bazaar.

Flying Dahi Vada at Joshi Dahi Vada

A tad gimmicky, the flying dahi vada gets its name from the way it is served to the customers. Head out to Joshi Dahivada at Sarafa Bazaar and see for yourself. Touted as one of the most interesting chaat corners in India, the eatery attracts foodies in large numbers. What brings them here is the way the owner of the shop tosses the vadas in the air and catches them with the serving bowl like a pro.

Bhutte ke kees and garadu are two dishes that are exclusively relished in Madhya Pradesh. Any trip to Indore would be incomplete without trying these two unique preparations. To make bhutte ke kees, boiled corns are mashed, and mixed with ghee, gram flour, and spices. Garadus are deepfried yams. Yam roots are cut, fried, and mixed with spices to prepare a crispy snack.  To try both these snacks, head to A-One Garadu, a little stall in Sarafa Bazaar.

Give your usual alu and ragda pattie a break and try Indore’s khopra patties. Prepared from coconut, the dish is a form of the evergreen alu tikki eaten all across the country. They just fill the tikkis with grated coconut before deep-frying them. What makes the dish irresistible is its crunchy texture and spicy flavour. Khopra patties are best served with a tangy red chutney. Located at Chappan Dukaan, Vijay Chat House is one of the city’s most popular food joints. Apart from their trademark khopra patties, they also serve all the snacks Indore is known for.

Hot Dogs at Johny Hot Dog

Yet another wonderful food experiment done by the people of Indore, Johny’s hotdogs are nothing like the hotdogs we are used to eating. The dish was awarded as the most-ordered dish on UberEats in the entire Asia-Pacific region. The hotdog is prepared by stuffing hot and crunchy potato patties inside the usual hot dog. It is served with finely-chopped raw onions and green chutney. When in Chappan Dukaan, you can’t afford to miss Johny Hot Dogs.

Poha-Jalebi at Prashant Nashta Corner

Often eaten with poha, Indore’s jalebis are thicker than the usual jalebis. Indore is dotted with modest roadside stalls selling poha-jalebi throughout the day. While Head Sahab Ke Pohe specialises mainly in poha, there is no dearth of nice places to try the divine and interesting combination of poha-jalebi. Prashant Nashta corner near Suyash Hospital on Red Church Road is one of the best places to start your day with a serving of the oh-so-popular Indori poha-jalebi.

When done treating your taste buds with an overdose of spices, head to Rasgulla House in Geeta Bhawan to try something sweet. Their gulab jamuns, rasgullas, ras malai, and rajbhog are just incredible. You’ll never forget the heavenly taste of their gulab jamuns, which are served piping hot with a generous amount of sugar syrup. Their rasgullas are also the most popular in the city. What makes a visit to the sweet corner interesting is its friendly owner Naniji, who has inspired many youngsters of Indore with her success story.

Shikanji is something we all have grown up drinking. While Modinagar’s Jain Shikanji is known for its secret spices, Indore has its own unique version of the evergreen refreshing beverage. Located in the Bada Sarafa area of the Sarafa Bazaar, Nagori Mishthan Bhandar is super popular for its shikanji. Prepared with milk and garnished with copious amounts of dryfruits, their shikanji is a blend of rabri and lassi. They serve interesting variations of the dish too. You’ll end up falling in love with the sweet taste of their shikanji.

Turmeric Milk at Laxmi Narayan Doodhwala

Another popular place that’s perfect to satiate your dairy cravings is Laxmi Narayan Doodhwala. They serve two flavours of hot milk-turmeric and saffron. It’s one of the oldest shops in Indore and continues to serve patrons, who come here after a day’s hard work to enjoy their hot, nourishing, and flavourful milk. The shop is located on RNT Marg at Sameer Chhawni in Indra Complex.

It’s the name of the shop that interests visitors more than their lassi. Located right opposite the famous Guru Kripa restaurant, Ghamandi Lassi has been attracting food bloggers, travel show hosts, and lassi lovers ever since it was established. Located at Sarwate Bus Stand, the iconic shop serves sweet, velvety, and thick lassi prepared with fresh yoghurt. It’s a taste that will stay with you for a long time.
