A salad bar and bar rolled into one! The Colaba outpost delights in every way possible! By Karishma Sakhrani
SoBo’s swish set won’t have to trek across the border anymore for a smooth cup of joe and a salad. Kitchen Garden by Suzette has opened their seventh outlet (within their bouquet of brands) in one of the many narrow lanes that cut across behind The Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Colaba.
The Suzette brand is growing fast; thanks to the heavy funding they’ve recently acquired, and the city’s increasing appetite for healthy, organic food. Like always, the menu at the new outlet is crisp, the flavours are clean and the vibe is cherry without being eerie. Word of warning though: expect your regular coffee run to cost you a pretty penny here with the perfectly-crafted sourdough boules that dangle in front of you, and the baked goodies that teasingly line the shelves at the cash counter. I’m not complaining though. I almost cannot have my morning coffee these days without breaking bits of their classic sourdough and dipping them into hunky chunks of butter.
In addition to an all-new breakfast menu, the Colaba outpost will be adding some extra cheer with an all-day tapas menu and a selection of French wines, along with some imported and domestic beers with prices that won’t break the bank, just as is in France. The French partner trio behind Kitchen Garden is truly always trying to deliver an authentic experience.
Sunday evening, opening day, a friend of mine and I go by for some bubbles and to try the new tapas offerings. They’re perfectly designed to pair well with a drink and some casual chatter. The ambience is minimal and bright, accented with beautiful hues of green from the plants artistically lining the space. Surrendering ourselves to the intended vibe, we spend hours catching up and grazing over the many plates of food, fighting for real estate on our small round table. I enjoyed the whole roasted cauliflower and the baked camembert with honey the most. Other recommendations and chef favourites of partners Jeremie Sabbagh and Antonia Achache include the sticky Japanese chicken wings, smoked salmon and the gluten-free falafel. And of course, to keep up with the millennials there’s a spot reserved for guac on the menu. And if you’re a creature of habit, they also have the signature salads and Sandos available all through the day!
Home is rather close by for me and I affirm that I’ve found a new lounging space/meeting hub/source of free wi-fi! And oh, also for food that’s healthy and delicious, endless cups of robust coffee from Koinonia and a glass of red for Friday evenings, or Monday afternoons!
