Make Your Way To These Spots For Tapas And Drinks In Delhi

Nothing is more suited to free-flowing conversations than a round of drinks (and then some) served with delicious little tapas. Hit up these spots in Delhi for the best in the game. By Naina Atri

Historically served at inns and taverns, tapas, or Spanish hors d’oeuvres, hold a more sophisticated position in restaurant menus today—they aren’t just snacks. From Spain, tapas have found themselves a place in cuisines across the world, taking on hybrid forms and local ingredients. The play on classic dishes like jamón or dry-cured ham and fried croquetas has led to interesting and exciting innovations. These small bites are far from simple and carry complex layers of techniques and flavours.

6 Spots In Delhi That Know Their Tapas

There are perhaps only a few who haven’t heard of the multi-award-winning bar in GK II, Sidecar, the brainchild of arguably the most well-known Indian mixologist, Yangdup Lama. Their concoctions, unique to Sidecar, keep drawing in crowds year after year, who leave dedicated to the bar. The cocktails are inspired by literary greats – Joan Didion, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Jane Austen, to name a few. The bar’s library and old-school furnishing speak to the bar’s ethos – good conversations over great drinks. But their tapas are just as important to the Sidecar name. Pair their inspired drinks with pork sliders, edamame and pigs in blanket, and you’re in for a memorable night.

In 2015, Vaibhav Singh a.k.a the coolest bar guy opened a coffee and wine bar, Perch, that soon became a Delhi favourite and a landmark in its own right in Khan Market. Pretty and calm, the demure minimalist space allows one to focus on the food and the drinks (we hear the Espresso Martini and Coffee Sangria shouldn’t be missed). From an elegant selection of meats and cheese, the Ploughman, their other bar nibbles include cassava chips, goat cheese mousse on toast and pork scotch eggs.

For a luxe boozy affair, you must head to Bohca, in Delhi’s Qutub-Mehrauli area. Influenced by the Spaniards, Bohca’s food and bar menus offer a variety of choices you can’t go wrong with. Sip on their Ginebra Tonica or the signature Bohcatini as you feast on their Chicken & Scallion Dumplings, Twice Baked Hassleback Potato and Lamb Tacos. Bohca also has outdoor seating, a feature that carries the most appeal in this pandemic-ridden world.

With stained glass windows, gothic chandeliers, low-arched ceilings and red and blue tones, Pintxo (pronounced pincho) are truly driving the Spanish theme home. Their authentic tapas menu, served with freshly baked focaccia bread, leaves one spoiled for choice. Empanadas, zucchini rolls, garlic prawns, chorizo, pork ribs – these don’t even cover half of the list. Sit outside on the balcony or inside in one of their cosy booths with your fruity sangrias and savour the delicious moments.

French for ‘love potion’, Philtre in Gurgaon seeks to create an ambience of comfort that allows for tête-à-têtes over cocktails and tapas. The European influence is hard to miss, from the interiors and warm soft lighting to the menu, designed by chef Gaurav Raghuvanshi. To the Spanish tapas, the bistro brings in traditional Indian twists, leading to creations like the ‘ulta tawa paratha nachos’, ‘amritsari potato tornado’ and ‘soya boti kebab’ served with golden garlic dust. Their in-house cocktails are just as experimental like the amphora – white spirit and bourbon with mascarpone cheese, jaggery and coke bitter. If you like to err on the side of caution when it comes to your drink of choice, their bar serves the good ol’ classics as well.

Modelled on the Basque cuisine and the resort town of San Sebastián, known for its pintxo bars (similar to tapas), La Latina Tapas Bar‘s food is almost too beautiful to eat. The aromas, however, are too seductive to ignore. Try their Prawn Gambas, Galician Octopus with buttery fondant potatoes, Plato de Charcuteria or their corquetas de jamón with their whimsical cocktails, like the Salmanca, made of Cognac, House-made Almond Liqueur, Cinnamon and Smoked Hickory, or the Clarified Red Snapper, live infused Gin, clarified tomato juice, a dash of Tabasco & Worcestershire sauce. After all, what could be more Spanish than olives, tomatos and a little spice?
