Check out Mumbai’s First Restaurant On Wheels, Now Open at CSMT

On October 18, Mumbai welcomed its first restaurant on wheels at the P’D Mello entrance of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. By Naina Atri

Monday marked the opening of Mumbai’s restaurant on wheels, which serves North and South Indian delicacies, along with Continental and other cuisines, as reported by The Indian Express. Located at the P’D Mello entrance, the railway restaurant is right next door to The Heritage Gully, which was launched by the Central Railways in 2018 as a treasure trove of railway artefacts.

The exterior of the restaurant is made of retro-styled bright mustard yellow discarded rail coach with 10 tables. The interior decor reflects the overall suburban theme of the restaurant, with images of local trains and Mumbai’s railway network. The inaugurated dining space can seat up to 40 people, as reported by the Hindustan Times. Other famous landmarks of Mumbai also figure in the restaurant’s interiors. The restaurant has been designed to be family-friendly, colourful and joyous.

“The aim of starting such a restaurant is to offer people the experience of eating on wheels to the users, as well as to generate revenue for railways,” said Anil Kumar Jain, Senior Public Relations Officer, Central Railway, reports The Free Press Journal.

The media house reports on the plans of the Central Railways to expand on the restaurant on wheels experience throughout the city in other locations like the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Kalyan, and Borivali. This expansion depends on the success of this first launch. The railways is expected to earn nearly INR 42,00,000 from the restaurant. Open to both the general public and travelling passengers, the restaurant functions according to COVID-19 guidelines and also has ample parking space. Since it is located in the terminus’ non-ticketing area, a platform ticket is not needed to dine at the restaurant.
