Petite Pie Shop—Chef Vanshika Bhatia’s labour of love—will transport you to a Parisian café the moment you step inside its chic space. Pistachio-coloured walls, harlequin tiled flooring, mahogany furniture, vintage lamps and an expansive French-inspired menu will work wonders to lure you into the cosiest bistro in town.
I visit the cafe on a mid-week evening to indulge in some sinful pies. However, the feast begins with a hearty serving of warm French Onion Soup (non-vegetarian version). Cooked in a light chicken and onion stock, and served with a large piece of bread immersed in the consommé—this wholesome appetiser unfurled a gamut of rich caramelised flavours.
Next, I order two thick grilled slices of fresh sourdough bread that comes paired with a house-made spread. I choose the figs and whipped feta spread. The sweet flavours of the roasted figs blend beautifully with the aromatic notes of the feta—I’d say this is the perfect autumn entrée.
Soon after, I dig into Petite Pie Shop’s two classic pies—Chicken Pot Pie that comes with a crispy puff pastry, and the Pumpkin and Cream Cheese Pie. Chef Bhatia surely knows how to make one fall in love with simple, classic dishes.
The Chicken Pot Pie—a quintessential comfort food—is made up of minced chicken and seasonal veggies, all whipped together in a scrumptious gravy. Topped with a flaky pastry, this wholesome pie’s humble flavours will take you on a magical culinary journey.
However, the Pumpkin and Cream Cheese Pie steals the limelight for me. Often labelled as a thanksgiving classic, this modest pie houses exquisitely rich flavours. The sinful layers of cream cheese complement the delicate slices of pumpkins, effortlessly. A rich and well-balanced pie, this, for me, is a clear winner.
To round off the evening of decadence, I relish two signature desserts of the Petite Pie Shop. The Warm Apple Pie and the Walnut Fudge Pie. The former one looks like a blooming rose on a plate; it is so beautifully crafted that deconstructing and eating it feels like a sin. The latter one houses rich nutty and caramelised flavours—just the perfect way to end the evening.
I bid adieu with a full belly and a fuller heart only to return soon.
