Nestled in the serene by-lanes of New Delhi’s Vasant Kunj, Roasted by Roseate offers a quiet dining experience replete with choicest ingredients, fresh produce, and heavenly coffee…and we get a taste of it. By Bayar Jain

It’s the tail-end of New Delhi’s winter, and a cup o’ Joe in this overcast weather seems ideal. A meal at Roasted by Roseate, an off-property patisserie and cafe extension of the popular luxury hotel Roseate House New Delhi, tends to my cravings. I walk past a car showroom, follow whiffs of fresh coffee roasts beyond Upstage—a co-working space by the same chain, and find myself transfixed by the simple, chic vibes of the hideout.

Three sides of the cafe are done up with huge glass windows overlooking lush green parks. Beyond the counter—partitioned by mouthwatering desserts, alluring leather wallets and trinkets by Nappa Dori, and fresh-out-of-the-oven pastries—lies my calling: a coffee machine against a pale pink wall. Further to the right are loaves of bread, seemingly baked to perfection. Cane-backed wooden benches and chairs line the cafe; I beeline for a round marble table towards the centre. It’s only now that I notice the subtle hints of gold splattered all around me—in the cutlery, napkin holders, and the yellow-hued lighting. I get a sense that the meal is going to be extraordinary.

But first, coffee. A hot brew of mocha quenches my thirst, while the strong cappuccino does the same for my mother, my date this afternoon. A sip of the drinks is hint enough for the freshness to follow, courtesy the heavenly whiffs of coffee beans emanating from the cups.

Next is a Pumpkin Arancini, a signature dish of the cafe, we’re told. Often, when chefs dub their dish as ‘signature’, my mind envisions a dish beyond the ordinary. And, these crispy fritters were nothing less than sensational. While the pumpkin balls themselves are crunchy on the outside, a small scoop into its casing reveals oozing soft cheese. Paired with herby tomato sauce, this dish already has my heart. The arborio rice—a smart addition to the arancini—has me inspired.

By the time we’ve finished sweeping every inch of the red sauce, a green dish sashays its way onto the table. “This is our take on the famous avocado on toast,” reveals the server. Each of the four triangles of crunchy multigrain bread topped with creamy and flavoursome avocado dance on my tastebuds. The dainty micro-herbs perched on each bread adds a fresh touch, while the tangy lemon and chilli marinated feta gives it the right amount of zing. Five minutes, and the plate is polished clean.

With starters out of the way, it’s time for the mains. Roasted by Roseate offers six pinsasa Roman-style flatbread, ranging from plain cheese Margheritas to exotic Fungi-loaded ones, and Diavola for meat-lovers. However, Mum and I both love our vegetables, and so the chef graciously offers to make an off-the-menu pinsa for us. Out comes an oval bread—evidently kneaded with love—garnished generously with broccoli, bell peppers, and zucchini amid mozzarella. In a first, neither of us reach for the seasonings—the dish already caters to this need, compelling us to take another bite leaving no room for conversations.

A similar touch of freshness seeps its way onto the cauli hummus bowl. The best way to describe it? A mini garden in a bowl. The creamy soft cauliflower hummus is peppered with fresh pickled vegetables and micro herbs, adding a touch of raw modernity to the dish. The subtlety of the chimichurri binds the flavours together, making it an ideal companion for the small discs of pita that accompany.

Bursting at the seams, my mum gives the dessert a no-go. I, however, give in to my cravings, despite feeling full too. I walk along the glass casing of desserts at the counter and pick a chocolate almond pastry to end the meal. Complete with a cylinder chocolate shard, small balls of cocoa, and white chocolate snowflakes for decor, this sinful dessert has me nibbling away. The multi-layered delicacy rounds up the meal aptly.
