Hot peppers, spicy flavours, and tangy curries are the apt phrases to describe the diverse culinary culture of the two Telugu states — Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. While the Hyderabadi biryani is a staple and favourite amongst those visiting these regions, we bring forth five local dishes that need to be on your southeast Indian culinary trail bucket list if you are a spicy food lover. 1. Andhra Chicken Curry

Succulent chicken pieces cooked to perfection with a generous mix of mouthwatering masala’s will leave you wanting for more. A popular dish, the Andhra Chicken curry is a unique variant of the regular chicken curry. Garnished with fresh coriander leaves that add a finishing touch, the dish is best served with hot rice, perfect for the spice lover in you.

2. Royyala Vepudu (Prawn Fry)

This is a spicy prawn fry made with rich and hot masalas and sautéed with curry leaves, green chilli, onions, and ginger-garlic paste. Hot, spicy, and tangy, this dish can be served with rice or can be eaten as a standalone dish too. Have it in the curry form or as a semi-dry starter. This is one of our favourite spicy dishes from Southeast India.

3. Gongura (Sorrel Leaves)

A multi-utility leaf that is used to make many kinds of dishes including pickles, curries, and stir-fries, Gongura can be consumed raw or with minimal cooking. Said to be the spiciest of all, this spinach dish is a staple at many restaurants with its most famous inclusion in the Andhra mutton curry.

4. Kakinada Peethala Iguru (Crab Curry)

Peethala Iguru or crab curry is another crowd-pleaser in the region. Said to be one of the favourite dishes of spice lovers, this delicacy packs the perfect balance of spicy and tangy. It is best served with steamed rice as the fiery spices would otherwise set your taste buds ablaze.

5. Paruppu Podi (Lentil Powder)

This one has to be our favourite. This staple dish is found in most homes and is a roasted spicy dal powder that is usually mixed with hot rice and ghee. A simple dish that takes no longer than 60 seconds to make, but it will keep you hooked from the first bite!
