Air Traffic In India Soars: Domestic Air Travel Records New Milestones

Post lockdowns and temporary grounding, domestic air travel is once again cementing its position as the preferred mode of transport as air traffic in India records new milestones. Scroll down below for a low-down on all the numbers and data on this. By Bayar Jain

It seems like air travellers have begun to shed their post-lockdown inhibitions, and have gleefully taken to the skies once again. As per a thread of tweets by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Indians are once again opting for domestic flights and setting new milestones in the process. Reportedly, over 2.59 lakh passengers flew across the country on January 9, 2021. On January 10, 2.73 lakh passengers were recorded—a substantial rise in one day. Interestingly, the ministry has recorded 2.56 lakh arrivals for January 9.

With regards to the number of flights, the ministry has recorded 2,151 flight departures for the same day, whereas the number of arrival flights was up by four at 2,155. As a result, the total flight movement for the day was recorded at 4,306. The footfall for the same day was recorded at 5.16 lakhs!

These numbers indicate traveller preference, hinting towards the fact that wanderers are increasingly comfortable with flying again. With most of 2020 gone by with temporarily grounded flights and travel restrictions, this data comes as a ray of happiness—both, for travellers and for the aviation industry.

Notably, only repatriation flights under the government’s Vande Bharat Mission were plying during the lockdown period. However, as the world slowly opens up for international travel, countries continue to assert travel restrictions. To facilitate movement, air bubbles among nations have been formed. In fact, as per a tweet by Hardeep Singh Puri, the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, the repatriation of over 47.2 lakh passengers—including 7,228 inbound travellers—was facilitated between such air bubbles on January 13 alone.
