Every year, the Badrinath Temple in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand welcomes thousands of visitors during its six-month-long pilgrimage season. Post that, the famous Hindu pilgrimage site remains closed for the rest of the year for winter break as the site becomes inaccessible due to heavy snow fall. And the announcement of the reopening date of the shrine is a celebration in itself.

This year too, a special ceremony was held at the Narendra Nagar Palace in Tehri District to announce that the famous temple, one of the four Char Dhams in India, will be ready to welcome pilgrims from April 30. Among the representatives of the temple committee, priests, and the stakeholders, Mohan Prasad Thapliyal, President, Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee, declared that the doors of the temple will be opened ceremoniously amid the chanting of Vedic hymns at 4:30 am on April 30.

It was also mentioned that the date and time were decided by the priests of the Tehri royal family, Acharya Krishna Prasad Uniyal and Sampoornanand Joshi during the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami earlier this year in January. Other than this, the calendar of other rituals associated with the reopening of the shrine was also declared.

Record says over 12 lakh pilgrims had visited the holy shrine during the pilgrimage season in 2019. The daily rituals continue at the Narsimha Temple in Joshimath, when the temple gets shut down during the winters.
