#SomeGoodNews: Bengaluru To Soon Build Colour-Coded Cycling Lanes

What if we told you that Bengaluru, the Silicon Valley of India is gearing up to recreate a little bit of Europe within itself? Yes, the capital city of Karnataka is building cycling districts just like in the beautiful western continent. By Kumar Shree

The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) is planning to create cycling districts across Bengaluru. If everything goes as per the plan, the city will soon have its first cycling district, much like those in Europe, and will have colour-coded lanes too. These districts will come across in a phased manner.

The ides is as simple as it can get — encourage more people to take up cycling for any purpose suitable to them, be it for fitness, refreshment, commute to work, or any other reason. With more and more people opting for the cycle over any other vehicle, it will not only take away the burden from the roads of Bengaluru but will reduce traffic and pollution in the city too.

While DULT is working on the details and the structure plan, many reports claim that the first of these tracks will stretch from Silk Board to Lowry Memorial Junction — the track that forms a part of Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road — and will also cover paths near Old Airport Road, KR Puram, Indiranagar and Koramangala.

With the help of tools like Google Maps, GPS Visualiser, Mapunity Draw, Strava and mapmyride, DULT has marked about 133 routes across the city. These tracks will also have five colour-coded lanes in orange, purple, red, green and blue shades. These lanes will facilitate movement for different types of cyclists.

Those cycling to work will take the purple lane; those on their way to schools will use the red; and, the ones cycling just for rejuvenation will stick to green. Moreover, blue will be for shopping trails and the orange one will lead towards transit lanes.

Now that’s something we are looking forward to, especially since multiple cities and countries around the world are working to promote cycling.
