Celebrity chef, Dev D, played by Ritwik Chakraborty, comes back to his hometown, Kolkata, from Paris after almost a decade to visit his ailing mother in a hospital. As they meet, she puts a rather unconventional demand on the table. She asks him to cook a certain maacher jhol (fish curry) that he had cooked for her almost about 10 years ago. And, that pretty much describes the storyline of this film. However, this iconic contemporary Bengali film does not just revolve around celebrating a single dish or food for that matter. It goes way beyond to explore the complexities of modern-day relationships, the gap between old-school vs. modern thinking, and much more. Every individual who absolutely loves food must watch this gem of a movie directed by Pratim D Gupta.

2. Always Be My Maybe on Netflix

Always Be My Maybe narrates the tale of two childhood sweethearts who reunite after 15 years of separation. Ali Wong plays the role of a celebrity chef while Randall Park is the leading male protagonist. The movie is essentially a rom-com, only way better than what we are usually used to watching. And, food plays a vital element in the storyline with some drool-worthy shots of Korean cuisine.

3. Daawat-E-Ishq on Amazon Prime Video

When it comes to food movies, Bollywood also has quite a few titles to offer. Daawat-E-Ishq is one of the latest in the lot that uses Lakhnawi cuisine as an essential element in the storyline. Parineeti Chopra and Aditya Roy Kapur play a bubbly on-screen pair. The movie also depicts societal vices like dowry; overall, it makes for a good weekend watch.

4. Chef on Amazon Prime Video

Saif Ali Khan plays a temperamental but down-to-earth chef who tries to reconnect with his son through food after losing his job. His life starts taking a positive turn when his wife suggests him a business idea that sets him on an epicurean trip. Those who love to travel must watch this one.

5. Daawat-E-Biryani on ZEE5

Daawat-E-Biryani portrays a beautiful love story between a family and it’s secret biryani recipe in Lucknow. India, and in fact, the world loves this one-pot dish. It is evident from the many varieties — Lakhnawi, Hyderabadi, Moradabadi, and Kolkata Biryani — savoured across the country. This ZEE5 original film revolves around a diary that hides the secret recipe of biryani that was created many decades ago by the cooks of Wajid Ali Shah, the exiled Nawab of Lucknow, who later settled in Metiabruz, Kolkata. A young couple leaves this diary behind due to unwanted circumstances in their lives. However, in their old age, the granddaughter embarks on an adventurous journey to find this diary and the secret recipe it holds.
