In a bid to support the United Kingdom’s cheese community, this food festival is now premiering online. Get ready with your notepad and a glass of wine to learn about the wonderful world of cheese this weekend. By Upasana Singh
Food festivals all over the world are taking over the internet during the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic. The latest in line is the virtual cheese festival — The British Cheese Weekender that will run over from May 8 to 10. The three-day online event has something in store for everyone, from kids to connoisseurs.

The list of activities being offered include talks on how to create the perfect cheeseboard and how to match cheese with wine, beer, and cider. The event is scheduled to kick off with a tasting session for kids presented by Sam Wilkin, podcaster @CellarmanSam and judge of World Cheese Awards 2019. The other activities include farm tours, guided tastings on Instagram live, and a Fondue Night cook-along with The Cheese Bar’s founder Mathew Carver.
A 30-minutes session on the History of British Cheese will explore the process of cheese making including pairing, raw milk, and a peek into the rind of artisan cheese. Over the weekend, a cheese question and answers round and a pub quiz has also been organised for cheese lovers to test their knowledge.
The idea behind the free virtual tour is to encourage people to buy cheese before they sign up for their chosen masterclass, to eat and listen to professionals. Cheese experts across the UK will run workshops and seminars on YouTube and Facebook with each session lasting for about an hour.

Organised by The Specialist Cheesemakers Association, Academy of Cheese, the Guild of Fine Food, and cheese writer Patrick McGuigan, this initiative has been set up to raise awareness about the previously thriving cheese industry that has suffered a setback during the COVID-19 outbreak. Britain’s specialist cheesemakers and retailers are joining hands in this cause to support smaller cheesemakers who are struggling in the current Coronavirus crisis.
