The iconic Burning Man festival is an annual nine-day gathering held at the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA. It is known for its free-spirited artistic performances, installations, spontaneous musical performances, and lots of partying. Camps are set up in the playa for the community and the event culminates with the burning of a wicker man effigy.

Because of the global Coronavirus pandemic, the Burning Man Project website recently posted, “After much listening, discussion, and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision not to build Black Rock City in 2020.”

Although this decision has disappointed many ‘burners’— the faithful attendees and performers of the festival, the Burning Man Project announced on Twitter that it plans to create a Virtual Black Rock City for 2020 in ‘The Multiverse’. Originally this theme was intended to explore the different worlds of the attendees, navigating between Black Rock City, their lives back home and other-selves. Coming to the digital sphere, it is going to be transformed into a whole new dimension that is likely to make it more engaging, connective, and fun.

Marian Goodell, CEO of the Burning Man Project has declared that artists, art car producers, chefs, and tech enthusiasts are setting up to give virtual demos, streaming contents, and online lessons. On the virtual playa, burners are looking forward to building their camps in virtual reality.

While specifics have not been revealed, Goodell urged people who have bought tickets to donate to the Burning Man Foundation. After all, the festival is not just an event but a community, a temporary city, and a global cultural movement. It has been held every year since 1986 and in 1990, it moved to the Black Rock Desert. In this new era of virtual reality, it will find a new voice and play an influential role in shaping the organisation and its events later on.
