Cyclone Fani has lashed out at a speed of over 200km/hr. On Friday, the coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal started witnessing very rough waves. The strong winds have uprooted many trees and power lines since yesterday, and the holy city of Puri seems to have been severely run-down. Almost one 1 million people have been evacuated for cyclone Fani: an “extremely severe cyclone.”
Cyclone Fani’s Effect On Travellers
- Close to one million people have been evacuated from the coastal regions of Odisha
- Tourists in Puri have been urged to evacuate
- Indian Railways announced special trains to evacuate tourists
- Even special bus services from Puri has been appointed for safe evacuation
- All major airlines have waived cancellation and rebooking charges to Bhubaneshwar and Kolkata
- 103 trains have been cancelled so far
- Bhubaneshwar airport remains closed until 1 pm today
- Kolkata airport may remain shut till 6 pm today
Emergency Measures
- The Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy have set up helicopters and ships for rescue operations
- Army and Air Force units are on standby
- The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are in Srikakulam to execute rescue operations
- 48 cyclone relief centres have been established
