Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar — these four districts of Uttarakhand have reported the highest number of Coronavirus cases in the state over the past few days. And hence, in order to curb the outbreak, these districts have been put under complete lockdown till Sunday. By Kumar Shree

Given the recent spike in the COVID-19 cases in Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has announced complete lockdown in four districts of the state till Sunday. The step has been taken to break the spreading cycle of the virus.

However, a bunch of essential services have been exempted from the lockdown. These include operations of industrial units in multiple shifts, agricultural activities, and construction activities. Liquor shops and hotels can also operate during the lockdown. Movement of persons and vehicles associated with these activities is also allowed.

Movement of goods on national and state highways, loading and unloading of cargo, and individuals travelling on buses, trains, and aeroplanes have also been exempted.

These four districts have seen an abrupt rise in the COVID-19 cases after July 11. In a video conference review meeting about the Coronavirus situation in the state, CM Rawat talked about the lockdown decision as a similar experiment in Dehradun had shown good results.

He also pointed out that if need be, such brief lockdowns can be further imposed in the future.

CM Rawat also added that health infrastructure in the state has been further strengthened since the outbreak of Coronavirus. Facilities like ICUs, ventilators, oxygen support, testing machines, and labs along with the availability of skilled human resource have been improved substantially.

He emphasised that timely response is the single most important factor in fighting this virus. There should be no delay in the treatment of COVID-19 positive patients and those who may have come in contact with them.

He also highlighted the importance of preventing large gatherings during festivals, any other form of celebrations, and local fares.
