In a first since the lockdownDelhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has flown direct charter flights to and from 28 global destinations, not connected earlier to the national capital. “It’s amazing to see how #DelhiAirport has seen direct charter flights operate to and from 28 destinations, globally,” Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) tweeted. 

Some of the destinations to which Delhi flew first-time flights include Auckland, Brisbane in AustraliaChristchurch and Wellington in New Zealand, Dublin in Ireland, Cairo and Marsa Alam in Egypt, Domodedovo in Russia, Hamburg-Finkenwerder in GermanyAnkara in Turkey, Manila in the PhilippinesJohannesburg in South Africa, and Ras Al Khaimah in UAE.

Moreover, some chartered flights that came to India for the first time from various global destinations include SCAT Airlines, BH Air, Lion Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Lanmei Airlines, Cambodia Angkor Air, Air New Zealand, Egyptair, Niger Air, Qantas Airways, Air Peace Limited, Brussels Airlines, and South African Airways.  

As per reports, DIAL also confirmed of flying 92 repatriation flights with 8,000 passengers to and from these 28 destinations. Moreover, Air India reportedly operated flights from Delhi and Mumbai to 20 cities such as Dublin, Auckland, Helsinki, Seychelles, Manama, VancouverMinsk. SpiceJet also reportedly flew all-cargo flights to new destinations including, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh City, Tashkent, Baghdad, Cebu, Khartoum, Incheon, Bishkek, Cairo, Moscow and Almaty.

Furthermore, the Airports Authority of India is in talks with the US, Canada, European and Gulf countries to establish individual travel bubble. Meanwhile, the ongoing Vande Bharat Mission, which is currently in its fourth phase has so far managed to fly back over four lakh Indians stranded abroad. 

“We began VBM to bring back about 190K stranded citizens. But when numbers grew manifold we ramped up the mission. Since 6th May, nearly 445K people have returned on VBM (170K) & chartered flights including foreign charters (275K),” Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted.
