In a bid to keep people indoors to contain the spread of Coronavirus in the city, the Delhi Police has started using drone technology to ensure that the social distancing measures are followed by all. By Manya Saini
The outbreak of the novel Coronavirus has created new and unprecedented challenges world over, but technology has lent a helping hand to countries trying to contain the pandemic. In the latest, the Delhi Police has launched drones equipped with a real-time announcement system and night vigil cameras to ensure social distancing is followed in the city.

As of now, three drones have been actively deployed in the South Delhi district of the capital city. The Delhi Police has revealed that the drones have high-tech features like high-resolution cameras with video recording, a range of up to 8 kilometres, and a night vision camera along with a high-intensity light source to detect any gathering during night hours.
The drones are patrolling areas with a high population density and are meant to keep a watch on people visiting ration shops, banks, and etc. The Delhi Police is looking to extend the technology to other areas, and they are currently buying drones and training personnel to be handlers. Municipal Corporations have also been quick to adopt drones as an effective way of spraying disinfectant on the roads especially in containment zones. Other countries like China and Hong Kong have also used similar measures with drones to sanitise and monitor activity.
At a time such as now when it is crucial to ensure the safety of the frontline workers engaged in essential services, moves such as this go a long way to keep them secure. The use of technology like this significantly reduces the chances of sanitation and police personnel catching the virus through direct contact.
