This week, Disney announced that the filmed adaption of the mega-hit stage production of Hamilton will premiere on the network on July 3. Plans to release the film were first announced in February. However, due to the global pandemic and strict social distancing measures across the United States, the theatrical release of the Broadway production has been pushed back roughly a year. The Broadway production was originally set to debut in theatres on October 15, 2021.

For all Broadway lovers, this is great news amid the lockdown, as you can watch the film from the comfort of your home. Directed by Thomas Kail, a large part of the film consists of live recordings of the original Broadway cast’s three performances at New York City’s Richard Rodgers Theatre in June 2016. The original cast member—Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the musical that won 11 Tony Awards in 2016, stars in the title role.

In an official statement, the executive chairman of The Walt Disney Company said, “No other artistic work in the last decade has had the cultural impact of Hamilton — an inspiring and captivating tale told and performed in a powerfully creative way.” He added that in today’s world that is experiencing extraordinary challenges, the musical’s story about leadership, tenacity, hope, love, and the power of people to unite and showcase solidarity against forces of adversity is relevant as well as impactful.

The film’s release on the eve of Independence Day in the United States is also befitting as the musical depicts the American Revolution and tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the nation’s founding fathers. The Broadway production has been described as being about “America then, as told by America now.”

With traditional-style show tunes, hip-hop, R&B, pop, and soul music, it is extremely difficult to get the musical’s Broadway tickets. Whether you have been lucky enough to see Hamilton live on stage or not, Disney’s stream of the adapted film will definitely be one to remember and replay for years to come.
