The driverless pod taxi system, which is already rising to prominence in several western countries is all set to make its Indian debut. The Uttar Pradesh government is considering the driverless pod taxi service between Greater Noida and Jewar International Airport.
These taxis can accommodate four to six people per ride. Moreover, the Yamuna Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Expressway are also in talks with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for extending connectivity to other remote areas.
As reported by the Mint, BJP leader and Jewar legislator Dhirendra Singh told PTI, “The Chief Minister’s thrust is on having a futuristic mode of transport, and taxi pods can be more viable on this route than a metro train. They are environment-friendly, cost-effective and provide last-mile connectivity.”

Singh further adds, “The accident rate in pod taxis is zero. There is no carbon emission as they are battery-operated. With pre-fabricated construction, the facility could be set up on the route in two months. One taxi can have five to six passengers, so that makes it more viable than even buses which run with empty seats.”
Calculations suggest that the estimated cost of this project will be around INR 50-60 crore per km. The total cost will thus be an estimated INR 1,250 to 1,500 crore.
