Bursting with colours, the iconic tulip fields in the Netherlands have been carved out by farmers to spread positive messages amidst the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. By Upasana Singh
Every year, from late March to mid-May, tourists rush to the infamous tulip fields in the Netherlands to witness the beautiful flowers in full bloom. Due to the spread of Coronavirus and social distancing rules, Dutch farmers closed their fields this year. However, one flower farm used the annual heading process, to keep the flowers strong for the next season, as an opportunity to send a heartwarming message.

Dutch Daffodils, a family-owned farm in Noordwijkerhout partnered with the travel company ‘Tulips in Holland’ to spell out “See you next year” in the tulip fields. They also carved out a giant heart in a field of red tulips. As the tulip farms are among the many tourist attractions shut down due to the worldwide pandemic, owners Rik and Ilse Pennings wanted to tell people that they cannot wait to have visitors next season.
The aerial shot of the beautiful fields with positive messages has been shared on social media. Part of the caption of the flower blog Tulips in Holland reads—“We headed the tulips a bit earlier to write this message. From our families to yours! We hope that this brightens your day a bit and we hope to see you next year!”
Other tulip farmers have also joined in the project to spell out messages such as “Stay Strong” in the fields to honour all the healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic. Such an uplifting gesture garnered immense support from people across the globe. The farmers have been praised for their comforting reminder and a tribute to everyone who had to cancel their travel plans.

Dutch tulip fields are extremely popular around the world and a must-visit spot on tourists’ wish lists. Last year, more than 1.5 million people visited the Keukenhof garden, the largest flower park in the Netherlands.
The messages of hope in the blooming tulip fields are cheering people up and reminding them to visit these beauties once #CoronaBeGone.
