Florida Keys is all set to reopen on June 1, after being closed for public for over two months, in order to curb the rising cases of Coronavirus. By Tanvi Jain

As life shows signs of normalcy across different parts of the world, many tourism boards are embracing the optimistic route by reopening tourist hotspots in the hope of bringing one of the worst-hit industries back on track.
One such is the Florida Keys, which is scheduled to reopen for the public on June 1, over two months after it was shut down on March 22, over rising cases of Coronavirus. The reopening will come with the removal of checkpoints at US 1 and State Road 905, which were put in place on March 27; and the lifting of airport screening at Key West International and Marathon Florida Keys airports that day. Moreover, lodging establishments barring vacation rentals will also open with 50 per cent occupancy.

“Monroe County plans to reopen to visitors on Monday, June 1 by suspending the checkpoints on US 1 and State Road 905 and allowing lodging establishments, with the exception of vacation rentals, to take guests at 50 per cent occupancy. Monroe County lodging establishments, like hotels, campgrounds, RV parks, marinas and other transient-licensed establishments will be required to implement sanitation procedures and follow the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) COVID-19 guidelines for enhanced cleaning practices. The timeline for removing the 50 per cent capacity restriction for lodging will be determined at a later date. Airport screenings and bus restrictions will also be lifted on June 1,” Monroe County Emergency Management said in a statement.

“Florida’s Full Phase 1 begins on Monday, May 18. All 67 counties may now begin re-opening as we continue to implement our #SafeSmartStepbyStep Plan for Florida’s Recovery,” tweeted Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis.
However, tourists will have to follow all safety rules such as wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. “As Florida re-opens, businesses’ can follow steps to protect their employees and customers from #COVID19 -Practice hand and face hygiene. Keep at least 6 feet between employees and customers. Wear a cloth face covering. Limit cash handling,” recommended Florida Dept. Health in a tweet.
