As if the Olympics weren’t enough, Japan gives yet another reason to visit the country this summer. Japan Airlines is giving away 50,000 free round trip flights to international visitors to one of its lesser-known destinations. By Tanvi Jain
The idea is to motivate travellers to explore Japan beyond urban centres like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, and get a better idea of the country’s history by visiting its rural areas. Moreover, the campaign also wishes to avoid overcrowding as a result of a surge in passenger traffic for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic games.
These free flights will only be available at Tokyo (Haneda Airport) and Osaka (Itami Airport, and Kansai International Airport). This promotion is a part of the Your Japan 2020 campaign, launched this year in partnership with the Japan Tourism Agency and the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO).
To avail this offer, you need to be an international visitor in Japan anytime between July 1, 2020, and September 30, 2020, and sign up to Japan Airline’s loyalty programme. Tickets will be handed out on a first-come-first-serve basis until late February, and confirmation will be sent via an email within three days. Applicants will be given the option to choose from destinations.
After recording 31.2 million tourists in 2018, around 6,00,000 travellers are expected to visit Japan this year since Tokyo is hosting the Summer 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
