The Prime Minister of France Edouard Phillippe has announced the nation’s commitment to the revival of tourism with the statement, that the industry is facing its “toughest trial in modern history and whatever strikes tourism, strikes at the heart of France.” Contributing a large chunk to the economy of the country, France was until last year the most visited country in the world.

The Prime Minister in the media address announced an 18 billion dollar relief package, Plan de Relance Tourisme, to support the sector through the Coronavirus crisis. He further said that the people will be able to holiday in France from July and August onwards including both the mainland Hexagon as well as overseas France.

Holidaymakers have also been assured of a full refund on their travel booking by the Prime Minister, as per reports, in case the country faces a relapse or second phase of the virus. France’s tourism industry has long been deemed the crown jewel of its economy.

The government will continue to support local establishments in terms of financial aid and policies until the end of 2020, with a limit of €10,000 per business. Cafe’s and restaurants in the designated, green zone will be allowed to open from June 2 onward.

As of now, France is looking to continue the existing conditions on international travel, with travellers being limited to European countries. The decision on ‘major international travel’ is expected by the end of the month depending on the continued success in reducing the cases.

All public places which are reopened are expected to function under strict guidelines regarding sanitation practices and social distancing.

France had been one of the worst-hit European countries due to the outbreak of the pandemic and has recorded 179,506 positive cases, with 27,529 people losing their lives.
