With the final season of the show having wrapped, fans are dealing with a bittersweet ending to one of the most iconic shows ever. But while the show is now wrapped, fans can still revisit their favourite scenes in actual locations where they were shot.
1. Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon
Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, on the south coast of Iceland, featured in episode one of the eighth season, as the location where Jon and Daenerys fly on dragons together, for the first time. Jon also happens to be riding the dragon Rhaegal, named after his father, Rhaegar.
2. Svínafellsjökull Glacier
Just off Iceland’s Ring Road (Route 1), this stunning glacier tongue was used in the seventh season to film the incredible, nail-biting battle between the army of the dead and Jon and his companions, which ended with Viserion being fatally wounded, and turning into one of the armies of the dead, by the Night King.
3. Stakkholtsgja Gully
This impressive canyon near the Þörsmörk highland reserve is where Jon and his companions ambushed a Wight to present to Cersei as proof of the existence of the White Walkers. Though conditions were tough, posing challenges in filming, the resulting footage was unforgettable.
4. Kirkjufell Mountain
Celebrated as the ‘most photographed mountain in Iceland’, the Kirkjufell Mountain, located on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, is easily recognisable as the setting for the creation of the first White Walker by the Children of the Forest, as seen by Bran in a vision in season six. It is also the ‘mountain shaped like an arrowhead’ in The Hound, Sandor Clegane’s vision, seen in the flames. Guided by Beric Dondarrion, The Hound overcame his crippling fear of fire for this thrilling scene in season seven.
5. Hengilssvæðið Volcano
Hengilssvæðið, Hengill in English, is the closest active volcano in Iceland, located in the Southwest, about a 30-minute drive from the capital city. This is where Brienne of Tarth engaged in a gruelling duel with The Hound in episode 10 of season four.
