After smashing it out of the park with two hit YouTube channels, The Flying Beast, and Fit Muscle TV, lifestyle YouTuber Gaurav Taneja achieved yet another feat with his latest channel: Rasbhari Ke Papa. Having already broken the world record of garnering the swiftest hundred thousand subscribers (it took him all of 98 minutes to do so), this new gaming channel already has over a million subscribers in less than two months. We talk to him to know more about this mammoth achievement, how travel content has changed during the lockdown, and more! By Bayar Jain

1. Congratulations on your new record-breaking YouTube Channel! How has the journey of setting it up been like for you, and how did you go about it?

The journey has been good. Usually, everyone thinks they need the ‘right time’ to launch a new channel, and even I felt so initially. Then I thought I’m delaying the process too much because of this, and decided to launch it on July 8. In fact, that’s how I launched my previous channels [Flying Beast, and Fit Muscle TV] as well. Sometimes, you just need to put your foot down, realise that everything cannot be perfect and just go ahead with it.

2. Why did you choose gaming as your genre?

I chose gaming because, honestly, I’m not a great gamer myself! The main idea is to interact with the audience, and this ‘live’ gives me an opportunity to do that. I don’t consider it a gaming channel. I prefer calling it a live-stream channel. In doing so, I get to interact with my audience, and they also get a chance to see who we really are.

3. There’s a lot of gaming channels worldwide. What makes yours different from the lot?

I think the way we [Taneja and his wife, Ritu Rathee] interact with the audience sets us apart. I think the key to success is how you connect with the audience, and how well they connect with your personality. The fact that they loved our personality on the channel has clicked. We were quick to realise that starting a live-stream channel might work. We thought live-stream would take us a notch above regular vlogging.

4. Having set the world record in such a short span of time, what can we expect next in line on the channel?

The record has less to do with our capabilities. Instead, it’s more to do with how much people love us, and they chose to subscribe. We’re very grateful to them for that. Having said that, we will try including more games that the two of us can play as a couple while staying away from hardcore gaming.

5. In your opinion, how has content consumption changed in the current scenario?

During the lockdown, I feel content consumption has drastically increased. YouTube’s new policy, which allows videos to stream at 480p on mobiles is proof of it. It’s a good thing for video makers as well as consumers. There will be more quality content now.

6. Your other channel, The Flying Beast, has extensive content related to travelling. How has the lockdown impacted content creation for it? How did you adapt to this change as a content creator?

Initially, we were planning to make it bigger. We even went on a lot of trips within India and outside in January and February, and collaborated with tourism boards for it. The lockdown seemed like a letdown at first as we could no longer execute all the ideas we had thought of. But a complete overhaul of our channels helped us. In fact, since the first day of our lockdown, most of our content has been made inside our house. This created a boom for us! Even though we don’t have beaches and mountains to show to our viewers anymore, the members of our house and how we interact with one another under one roof helped create a connect with the viewers.

7. As a pilot, what predictions do you foresee with regards to flying after Coronavirus?

It will be a tough time for the airlines, even if everything gets back to normal. Visiting destinations would probably be last on the list for some time because of the financial crises. It might take a long time, but it will come back for sure since humans can’t do without travelling. Some industry experts feel it could take a full year or year-and-a-half till things normalise.

8. Domestic road trips are expected to rise in the post-pandemic world. Where would you go for your first rebound road trip, and why?

I think Rishikesh, or someplace similar, six-seven hours away from New Delhi. I’ve been to Rishikesh before and I would love to go back.

9. As a health and lifestyle enthusiast, any tips on how one can ensure wellbeing (physical, mental and emotional) during the lockdown?

I think during the lockdown, everyone has enough time to work on their fitness. Just 10-15 minutes brisk walking on the terrace or indoor meditation and yoga is good enough. If you’re interested in weight training, buy a pair of dumbbells. This is the best time to invest in your body. It will even help you destress and make it easier to hit the reset button.
