Apart from being called the City of Joy, Kolkata is also known for its thriving art scene. Once known as the cultural capital of the world, the city has art exhibitions springing up every other day. The most recent one to join the bandwagon is titled Ghare Baire | The World, The Home and Beyond: 18th-20th Century Art in Bengal art exhibit, and we have got all the deets! By Amitha Ameen

Taking place in the recently renovated 150-year-old Currency Building in Dalhousie, Ghare Baire, is a month-long art exhibition. A first of its kind showcasing artists and art of Bengal, the exhibition was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 11, 2020.

The exhibition which is sectioned into 12 different categories was commissioned by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and curated and organised by DAG, in collaboration with NGMA. Showcasing over 600 artworks, the exhibition is an ode to the art and artists that emerged between 1700-1800’s and during the Bengal Renaissance.

The exhibition features the works of many notable and accomplished artists. Contemporary Indian artist Sakti Burman, painter of modern art, Biren De and celebrated photographer Nemai Ghosh are just some of the big names whose works are currently on display at the exhibition. A visit to the Ghaire Baire exhibit is sure to take you on a visual journey of eastern India’s glorious past and bring to the limelight the many unsung talents from the region.

The Currency Building where the exhibit is currently taking place is in itself a heritage structure of importance. According to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the building was built in 1833.
