Revealed: Indian Railways’ Post-COVID-19 Coach Will Change The Future Of Train Journeys

Are you wondering whether train journeys will be safe post the pandemic? Well, Indian Railways’ post-COVID-19 Coach has all the answers to your queries. By Tanvi Jain

In order to make train journeys safer in the post-COVID-19 era, the Indian Railways has come up with a new design so as to avoid the spread of infection among passengers and railway staff. This new design was recently revealed by Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

PM @NarendraModi Under the leadership of the Railways, special coaches were prepared to prevent the infection of COVID-19. These coaches have handsfree water tap, soap dispenser, gate and toilet flush, which passengers will be able to operate without touching with their hands,” he tweeted.

Some of the features of these COVID-19-protected coaches include, handsfree water and soap dispensers, contactless toilet gatesfoot-operated latches, flush valves, lavatory doors, and forearm operated handle for compartment door, antimicrobial copper-coated handles, titanium-dioxide coated seating material, and plasma air purifiers fitted in every coach. The production for the same has already begun at the Kapurthala Rail Coach Factory.

“Post COVID Coach is equipped with copper-coated handrails and latches because copper degrades the virus landed on it within a few hours. Copper has anti-microbial properties. When the virus lands on copper, Ion blasts pathogen and destroys the DNA and RNA inside the virus. The plasma air equipment will sterilise the air and surfaces inside the AC coach using ionised air to make the coach COVID-19 and particulate matter resistantThis provision will also improve the ion concentration from 100 ions/cm to more than 6,000 ions/cm. Nanostructured Titanium Dioxide Coating functions as photoactive material that kills viruses, bacteria, mould, and fungal growth and enhances indoor air quality. It is non-toxic and approved by the food testing laboratory of the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA), CE certifiedTiO2 is considered to be a safe substance and is harmless to humans. This Titanium Di-oxide coating will be applied on washbasins, lavatory, seats and berths, snack table, glass window, floor, virtually every surface that comes in human contact, and will remain effective for 12 months,” the Railway Ministry explained in the official press release.
