Current reports suggest that the project could see a total investment of INR 6,642 crore, out of which INR 5,000 crore will be allocated for New Delhi and INR 1,642 crore will be allocated for CSMT.

On a regular day of operation, CSMT handles 1,300 local and long-distance trains. These trains carry over a million passengers in totality. New Delhi railway station, on the other hand, takes care of about 200k passengers, daily.

As reported by Business Standard, V K Yadav, chairman of the Railway Board said, “The proposals to redevelop New Delhi and Mumbai (CSMT) stations are under consideration of the Public-Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC) under the Ministry of Finance. Within 10 to 15 days, we will be inviting tenders for these stations.”

Once the redevelopment is complete, these stations will have pre-decided user charges on passengers and visitors, like the airports. This charge will double up as the main revenue stream against the invested capital.

The redevelopment of these two stations forms part of the INR 13.68 trillion capital investment planned by the Indian Railways for infrastructural developments of stations across India over the next five years.

Yadav also said that — “We are targeting to finalise these tenders in the next two months’ time.”

Projects under the INR 13.68 trillion capital investment have been identified as supercritical and critical. The supercritical projects are aimed for completion by December 2021 and critical projects by March 2024.
