The month of Ramzan is spent fasting from dawn to dusk by the Muslims worldwide. It is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam that lasts for 29 to 30 days, from the sighting of one crescent moon to the next. At the end of the month, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated.

One of the largest mosques in India–Jama Masjid–witnesses huge crowds during the holy month of Ramzan. Typically, Muslims flock the courtyard that can accommodate more than 25,000 people to pray. Due to the spread of Coronavirus, the mosque is one of many religious sites that have been closed at this time of the year. However, much to our delight, the doors of this beautiful 17th-century mosque have been opened via a virtual tour. As people are staying indoors, this is the best way to celebrate the festivities whilst staying safe from the COVID-19 outbreak.

The 360-degree view from the virtual tour will enable you to marvel at the beautiful architecture of Jama Masjid that was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, at a cost of one million rupees. Constructed by more than 5,000 workers, the mosque was originally called ‘Masjid e Jahan Numa’ meaning ‘mosque commanding the view of the world’ as it was visible from miles and one could see the entire hillock from it.

You can take the online tour and look at the marvellous interiors by visiting this website. The detailed inscriptions on the central arch and carved out strips of red sandstone and white marvel can be seen through these tours. The inlay details of interior arches, domes, and the balcony included in the tour are some of the most eye-catching works of architecture.

During this month of fasting, prayer, and reflection, as the historic Jama Masjid stands empty due to the pandemic, its tranquillity can be witnessed online. So, sneak into the majestic mosque while you stay safe and positive at home.
