As per the previous schedule, both Kedarnath and Badrinath Dham were scheduled to reopen on April 29 and 30. However, new reopening dates were announced after a recent meeting between Uttarakhand State Government and the royal family of Tehri. Both Dhams will now reopen on May 14 and 15.

The decision has come after the head priest, Rawal, of Badrinath Dham reached the state on Monday, April 20. As per the current mandatory protocol, he along with his entourage are supposed to observe quarantine for the next 14 days. Keeping this in mind, the Chardham authority decided to postpone the dates for reopening the Kedarnath and Badrinath Dham.

Tourism and Religion Minister, Satpal Maharaj said, in case of yet another lockdown extension by the central government, the concerned authorities should come up with arrangements to reopen the Chardham. His statement suggests that the new dates are most likely confirmed for reopening. However, this is something that can only be confirmed with time.

Every year, the doors of Badrinath Temple are reopened only after the Kedarnath shrine is open for devotees. This happens after the day of Akshay Tritiya, which is considered auspicious. This year, however, because of the lockdown, the reopening rituals are getting rescheduled and delayed.

About 130 men have been working for the past few days to remove thick blankets of snow from Chaani Camp to Rudra Point to make the path clear and accessible.
