Kedarnath Temple To Open Gates For Visitors On May 9 This Year!

One of the most sacred and revered pilgrimage sites in the country, Kedarnath temple is all set to open its gates for visitors on May 9, 2019. Here are all the details you would need to plan your yatra this year. By Kumar Shree

Located in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, the Kedarnath temple sits amidst the mighty expanse of Himalayas. One of the four Chardham Yatra destinations in India, the high altitude and the absence of any motorable roads, makes it one of the most difficult pilgrimage sites. Kedarnath is located at the farthest and at the highest point among all the jyotirlingas.

The altitude of 3,583 m above sea level, the extreme weather conditions and the unavailability of any other option except a 14-km trek to Gaurikund makes it one of the most difficult shrines for worshipers. The weather conditions are so unpredictable and extreme that it allows the temple to remain open for only six months in a year.

For old-age devotees, who face difficulty in scaling the 14-km trek, other options like horse rides and even helicopters are available. Opting for the helicopter will definitely make it easier, but it comes at a cost. You will lose this once in a lifetime chance of witnessing the natural beauty in this part, as only those who opt for the trekking or horse options, get to witness the most breathtaking and ethereal views along the way.

The Lord Shiva temple will open after a gap of few months and the kapat will open for visitors and devotees on May 9, 2019, at 5:35 am. While the opening date and time have been decided, the closing date and time are yet to be decided. It will depend on multiple factors and the climate conditions at large.

As long as there is time, plan your trip and go ahead.
