While the Kochi-Muziris Bienalle was expected to take place this year starting December 12, the latest update suggests otherwise. Fans will now have to wait until November 2021 for the same. This decision has been made because of the Coronavirus scare across the country.

Although events, businesses and other institutions across the country are opening under succeeding versions of Unlock, the Coronavirus scare continues to linger. Kochi, where the event takes place, is still registering regular spikes in the number of COVID-19 positive cases.

The official statement regarding the postponement reads, “Over the past few months, the Kochi Biennale Foundation has been discussing the COVID-19 situation with our stakeholders. Due to the continuing uncertainties and generally unfavourable conditions on-ground, it has been decided to move the opening of the Biennale to November 1, 2021. We expect that circumstances by then would be conducive for visitors, artists, staff, and others for a safe and complete Biennale gathering.”

Although the main festival has been postponed, thankfully, the fourth edition of the Student’s Biennale will still happen digitally. Curator-mentors, Suresh K Nair, Archana Hande, Manoj Vyloor, Adip Dutta and Vasudha Thozhur will lead the segments.

Ordinarily, the exhibition attracts nearly six lakh people during the period of three months. The festival that started in 2012 has since grown many folds in popularity.

Notably, many events and exhibitions around the world have been cancelled this year because of the pandemic. While many of these have been postponed for the next year, many others are taking the digital route, instead.
