Largest COVID-19 Care Centres In India! Including The Eden Gardens

The fight against COVID-19 is no easy feat, particularly when you’re a country of over a billion people. This Herculean task requires precautions of gigantic proportions, which is why India has set up some of the biggest COVID-19 Care Centres in the country. Here are some of them. By Bayar Jain

1. Sardar Patel COVID Care Centre, New Delhi

According to a report by NDTV, the Delhi government has converted the Radha Soami Spiritual Centre in South Delhi to create the world’s largest COVID-19 care centre. This healthcare centre — which is reported to be roughly the size of 22 football fields — once provided a space for over three lakh pilgrims to attend sermons. Once the pandemic started to permeate through the capital city, it reportedly doubled as a temporary housing facility for migrant workers, owing to the presence of semi-industrial kitchens. As cases continue to rise, the Chhatarpur facility has been converted to cater to Coronavirus-positive patients. The same report also states that military and paramilitary will help with operations, maintenance, logistics, medical equipment and manpower. Additionally, the report also suggests that the facility will have ambulances and its own pathology laboratory for testing.

2. Eden Gardens, Kolkata

Once home to iconic cricket matches, the Kolkata Police has requested the city’s legendary Eden Gardens to be converted to a temporary COVID-19 care centre, states The Indian Express. As per a release by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), the galleries of the stadium’s E, F, G and H blocks would be used to set up such facilities. In case more space is required, J block would be converted as well. As per the release, these spaces would be properly segregated and secured upon conversion. The remaining blocks will continue to operate for administrative purposes with necessary precautions. Notably, under normal circumstances, Eden Gardens has a capacity of accommodating 68,000 viewers.

3. Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai

As per a report by India Today, Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex is home to the city’s largest makeshift COVID-19 hospital. Built by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), this healthcare unit is being created in two phases, the first phase of which has already been completed. According to Live Mint, the 1,000-bed jumbo facility also includes a 200-bed ICU. Reportedly, the first phase only took a fortnight to be set up. With the second phase almost ready, 1,000 more beds will be added to the list, along with a 108-bed ICY facility and 12 dialysis units.

4. Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), Bengaluru

With 10,100 beds (of which 100 are for ICU patients), Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) is readying to convert into a COVID-19-care facility, as per reports by The New Indian Express. Reportedly, this former exhibition centre will house 2,200 staffers, including healthcare personnel and police. Once ready, the area may have arrangements in place for safe garbage disposal, ECG and oxygen support facilities, and a control room at the nearest hospital to monitor the centre.
