Located on the third floor of Gurugram’s luxury address, Ardee Mall, is a brand-new restaurant that serves up flavourful and innovative dishes in a snug setting. Maachis-Housefull Of India is only a couple of weeks old, but its menu inspired by India’s regional recipes guarantee that it is here to stay. By Adila Matra
What We Loved
Even though it is housed in a mall, Maachis makes sure you get the authentic fine dining experience. While the striking chandeliers and fancy crockery keep your eyes busy, every dish indulges your palate—Maachis is truly a celebration of senses. Chef Manoj Joshi is a Delhi boy but he does justice to every dish on the menu, be it South Indian, Parsi, North Eastern, or Bengali. From the flakiest Malabar parotta (layered flatbread from Kerala) to the khoba roti (Rajasthani flatbread made of coarse wheat flour), he understands the nuances of each regional dish.
Once you settle in one of their super comfy couches, replete with cushions et al, order a bowl of Roasted Pumpkin Soup. Easily my favourite dish on the menu, the soup is served in a turquoise ceramic bowl that complements with the colour of the decor at Maachis. The caramelised pumpkin broth with a hint of garlic is topped with caramelised onions that give it a zing. If you are a seafood fan, go for the Seafood Hot Pot—an assortment of seafood, poached in a bisque of kodumpuli or kokum.
From the salad section, choose the Tempered Beets & Coconut Salad. It is crunchy, savoury, and feels like something that your mom whipped up as an afternoon snack. Before the main course, choose from one of the regional tapas plates—the Anardana Mirch Paneer is a revelation. Rubbed with chilli and roasted, the paneer comes with a centre of gooey cottage cheese and crumble of dried pomegranate seeds from Uttaranchal.
For the more daring guests, Maachis offers Naga Ghost Pepper Wings, where the pungent flavour of bhut jolokia (one of the hottest chilli’s in the world, cultivated in the Northeast Indian states) will have you reaching for the Kokum Chaach (buttermilk with kokum, curry leaves and mustard). The Chicken Tikka Trilogy—chicken tenders marinated in basil pesto, sundried tomato sauce, and scarmoza will melt in your mouth. Finish off the meal with one of their desi desserts with a western twist—Malpua Waffle and Chai Biscuit creme brulee are my recommends.
Why We Would Return
One visit is not enough to try out all the regional dishes on the menu. The Railway Mutton Curry, for instance, warrants a second visit. So does Maachis’s take on the Andhra claasic Natu Kodi (a spicy Andhra chicken curry made with a natuve chilli spice mix and a hint of coconut). If not these, the Irani Samosa—a Parsi favourite–with a filling of lamb keema will make you come back for more.
