Find Out What's Manish Malhotra's Favourite City In The World. *Hint* It's Not Paris!

Chivas brought together five disruptive ‘alchemists’ to curate hypnotic experiences on their interpretation of the ‘Sixth Sense’.  And one of the alchemists was ace designer Manish Malhotra. We spoke to him about his collaboration with Chivas, his creative process, summer fashion essentials, his take on travelling solo, and more. By Priyanka Chakrabarti

What do you expect Manish Malhotra to create when it comes to highlighting the essence of ‘intuition’? Well, of course, something larger-than-life! For Chivas Alchemy, the designer created a massive centrepiece made of mirrors. Think of a huge collection of mirror strips suspended from the ceiling right above the bar. It’s safe to say, this creation was truly extra-sensorial.

1. Could you give us an insight into the concept of creating this experience with Chivas?

This collaboration with Chivas is perfect for me because I launched a brand new vertical in December – Manish Malhotra Design and Décor. The theme that I am portraying for this event is ‘intuition’. For me, intuition is all about sensing, perception and perceiving. For this event, I created a long bar, which is the centrepiece of the evening and it’s made of mirrors. I feel mirrors reflect what you feel and that’s what I want to bring forth through the concept of this bar. This bar also symbolises luxe living and luxury, which is the core DNA of Manish Malhotra brand and Chivas.

2. What does travelling mean to you?

Travelling is the fuel of my life. My work has taken me around the world — from Bangkok and Singapore to New York and Switzerland, and to many more countries… I am very grateful for all the experiences because it has helped me evolve as a designer, creative person and a human being.

3. How has travelling inspired your creativity?

Travelling is the best teacher. It teaches you about different cultures, people and mindset. So for me, who has not studied fashion, ‘travel’ is a huge teacher. It has really helped me open up my mind and heart. And this metamorphosis of evolving and growing as an individual (that comes with exploring and travelling) has transcended in my work.

4. What has been your best holiday so far?

I was recently at St. Moritz, Switzerland for Akash Ambani‘s pre-wedding bash and I absolutely loved the place!

5. If you could pack only five things for a vacation what would they be?

I would definitely pack my most comfortable shoes, athleisure kind of clothes so that I can move around freely, a scarf, perfumes (my scent follow me everywhere) and gel for my hair.

6. Care to share a couple of fashion essentials for summer travelling?

Athleisure should be your mantra! Wear sneakers in which you can walk comfortably during summers. Carry a nice white jacket which is not very warm, and of course, sunglasses.

7. And your favourite city is New York?

I love New York. It’s a very liberating city.

8. Do you enjoy solo travelling?

Because of the work and movies, I have never really travelled solo, you know. I always had somebody with me. But, what I would love to do is walk around the city alone and get to know it better — the culture, the people and the style.

9. Do you have a destination in mind that you want to visit this year?

Wherever my work takes me next. I am open to surprises!

10. What does luxury travel mean to you?

Travel means something to me — whether it is luxurious or not. it’s ‘travel’ that matters because, for me, that is exploring the mind.
