COVID-19 made 2020 a pretty uneventful year for travel and all things related. Thankfully, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York’s (Met) Virtual Art Exhibition is here now. By Kumar Shree
While many art shows and events couldn’t see the light of the day in 2020, thanks to the pandemic, many chose the virtual route to stay afloat. The Met, however, has taken things a notch higher; it has recently come up with a way to not only go virtual but to replicate the near-real experience as closely as possible for patrons, courtesy augmented reality!
For its latest exhibition called The Met Unframed, the museum has partnered with Verizon to bring immersive digital galleries straight to your homes. The exhibition features more than a dozen of digitally-rendered galleries, 50 artworks from across the Met’s collection, and even a gaming experience for visitors. Those interested can visit the website and explore it all.

As reported by archpaper.com, Max Hollein, director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in a statement said, “Our mission since The Met’s founding 150 years ago has been to connect people to art and ideas, and to one another—something we’ve found to be more powerful than ever over these last months of isolation and uncertainty.”
Talking about The Met Unframed, he added, “The Met Unframed brings the Museum to audiences wherever they are in an innovative viewing experience in which users can virtually visit iconic spaces and engage with The Met’s masterpieces, learn more about the works playfully through AR, and enjoy bringing the art into one’s surroundings.”
The five-week-long exhibition will feature works by celebrated contemporary artists such as Carmen Herrera, El Anatsui, Ibrahim El-Salahi, Mark Bradford and Sam Gilliam. The exhibition also has antique works on display like the Temple of Dendur (completed by 10 BCE).
