1. National Museum

One of the largest museums in the country, this one is also called the National Museum of India. The idea for what was incepted in May 1946 by the Maurice Gwyer Committee is now a full-fledged museum under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Visit the museum to witness a diverse collection of around 2,00,000 objects ranging from arms, Asian antiquities, decorative arts, jewellery, manuscripts, paintings and so much more. 

Where: Janpath, New Delhi 

Timings: 10 am to 6 pm 

Entry Fee: INR 20 for Indians; INR 650 for foreigners; Students up to class 12th get free entry ticket with a valid id-card. 

2. National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum

Designed by the renowned architect Charles Correa, the museum is popularly known as Crafts Museum. The collection here reflects India’s deep-rooted handicrafts and handlooms tradition from over 33,000 specimens acquired over the period of 60 years. Visit here for a diverse range of sculptures, utensils, folk paintings, bamboo crafts, cane crafts along with an exquisite display of the textile craft from across the country. 

Where: Bhairon Marg, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi 

Entry Fee: INR 20 for Indians and INR 200 for foreigners 

Timings: Galleries 10:00 am to 6:00 pm (Monday closed); Administration and Library 9:30 am to 6:00 pm (Saturday & Sunday closed) 

3. National Rail Museum

The history of the fourth-largest railway network in the world sure must be fascinating and the National Rail Museum, spread over an area of over 11 acres, houses it all. The National Rail Museum operates on a perfect balance of traditional and modern, where on one hand it houses a collection of traditional steam (F 734, YB-2 429, P-Class 31652 etc.), diesel (WDM-1, ZDM 1, SrR 203 etc.), and electrical locomotives (WCG1, WCP 1, YCG-1-21900); on the other it operates highly modern setups like toy train, miniature India, rail simulators, interactive mobile apps, and rail garden to mention a few, inside the museum. 

Where: Shanti Path, Chanakyapuri, Near Bhutan Embassy 

Entry Fee: Weekdays – INR 50; Weekends & Govt. Holiday – INR 100; Simulators and train rides have separate tickets 

Timings: Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 05:00 pm (Entry closes after 04:30 pm); Monday closed

4. National Gallery of Modern Art

Nurtured by the then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and Maulana Azad, the National Gallery of Modern Art is a premier institute of its kind, which was inaugurated on March 29, 1954. The museum along with its branches in Mumbai and Bengaluru houses an expansive display of the changing art form. It displays a collection of all the prominent artworks in the field of visual and plastic arts of last 150 years from 1857 onwards. Head over to have your senses surprised at the marvels of modern art. 

Where: Jaipur House, India Gate 

Entry Fee: INR 20 for Indians; INR 500 for foreigners 

Timings: Tuesday to Friday 11:00 am to 6:30 pm; Saturday and Sunday 11:00 am to 8:00 pm

5. National Science Centre

Popularly known as ‘A Dream Castle for One and All’, the National Science Centre in Delhi is one of the largest science centres in Asia, which is a reason in itself to visit the museum. Come here to witness the sheer enchantment of science in the working through real-life models and to revisit the memory lanes of your childhood. 

Where: Bhairon Marg, Near Gate No.1, Pragati Maidan 

Entry Fee: INR 60  

Timings: Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 06:00 pm; Saturday-Sunday from 09:30 am to 08:00 pm
