This week, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari approved the INR 25,000 crore project that will connect the holy city of Amritsar with the national capital of India via a new expressway. Fulfilling the long-standing demand of the Sikh community, the project will be a greenfield or a fresh contract under the Union Government’s Bharatmala scheme.

Currently, it takes about eight hours to reach Amritsar from Delhi by road. With the development of the new project, travel time will be cut short by four hours. Moreover, the road is part of a larger expressway that will eventually end at Katra in Jammu and Kashmir where the Hindu holy shrine of Vaishno Devi is located. Hence, the proposed Delhi-Katra Expressway will pass through Amritsar and form the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway.

An official statement by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that the alignment of the expressway was fixed in January 2019 and the process of land acquisition has started. It would cover a number of prominent Sikh holy sites related to the five Sikh Gurus such as Sultanpur Lodhi, Goindwal Sahib, Khadoor Sahib, and the recently developed Dera Baba Nanak or the Kartarpur Sahib International Corridor in Punjab.

Nitin Gadkari announced that the road from Amritsar to Gurdaspur will be made completely signal free. This would give people the option to travel to Gurdaspur from Nakodar via Amritsar or via Kartarpur.

This is major news for Delhiites who constantly travel to the Golden Temple, a significant spiritual site of Sikhism. It will soon be possible to complete the journey in a day, without staying over in Amritsar. Further, the announcement of connectivity till Katra has delighted many devotees who will easily be able to take a smooth ride by road to reach the sacred Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir.
