After weeks of battling the COVID-19 pandemic, these states in northeast India have now been declared free of the virus by the central government. By Upasana Singh
Minister of State for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh has announced that five out of the eight states in the North East are Coronavirus-free. Earlier, three states in the region—Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram had declared few confirmed cases of the virus; in recent weeks, there have been no new positive cases.

For the past six years, priority given to the region’s development and infrastructure has played a vital role in combating the virus. During the current crisis, supplies in the region have been brought via air with the help of Air India and the Indian Air Force. Singh said that this has been diligently done to ensure there are no shortages of essential goods in Northeast India.
The Minister approved the proposals given by the Northeast states of Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur for health-related projects and management of COVID-19 infections, critical care, and upgraded health facilities. They will now be dealt with priority. He also pointed out that DoNER had issued a fund of INR 25 crores to assist the state governments in the initial stage for COVID-19 related activities, even before the lockdown was imposed.

Last week, the Sikkim government closed all borders for tourists until October 2020. This step was taken to ensure that the virus does not enter the Himalayan state. The decision was made in view of the welfare of seven lakh people living in the region. Migrant workers in the state are being taken care of, and after the lockdown ends, they will be given jobs by the government.
In India, lockdown 3.0 has been imposed after a surging number of Coronavirus cases. Majority of the chief ministers are in favour of the continued shut down in order to control the spread of the virus.
