Reports of nature’s recovery and animals returning to their original habitat have been in abundance through the worldwide lockdown. The latest marvel was witnessed by the villagers in Bihar’s Singhwahini village, where they saw a stunning view of the snow-capped Mt Everest. By Manya Saini
Residents of Singhwahini village in the Sitamarhi district of Bihar, this week, saw for the first time in decades, the majestic peaks of the world’s highest mountain from their homes. Old-timers living in the area said that the last time this had happened was in the 1980s.

Much to the wonder of the country, the photo was shared on Twitter by Ritu Jaiswal, the Mukhiya of Gram Panchayat in the village. The caption read that it was captured from the roof of a village house. She added, even though after rains they could sometimes glimpse the mountains in Nepal, this is the first time she had the chance to see the great Himalayan range.
The distance between Singhwahini and the Himalayas in Nepal is almost 190 km and the decrease in pollution, due to the lockdown, has successfully cleaned the air enough for such a sight to be a reality.
Across Bihar as well as other states in the country, environmental experts have noted the improved air quality due to the steep drop in harmful gas emissions and industries being closed.

Recently, the residents of Siliguri in West Bengal also woke up to the views of snow-capped peaks of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak, visible from their terrace. In a similar incidence, after decades, the people of Jalandhar saw the Dhauladhar range from the city.
India went under a nationwide lockdown on March 25 to control the spread of the novel Coronavirus. In these extraordinary times, as people remain home, nature and animals are having a gala time healing themselves after years of human activity.
