Earlier on Tuesday, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan mentioned in Rajya Sabha, that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited 58 countries in the past five years, on a total expenditure of INR 517.82 crores. This was informed in response to a question raised reportedly by MP Fauzia Khan.

“Total expenditure on these visits was INR 517.82 crore,” he said.

As per further details of the reply submitted by the Minister, the PM visited the US, Russia and China, five times each, and other countries such as Germany, Singapore, UAE, Sri Lanka and France. Moreover, while some were multi-nation trips, others were standalone trips.

While sharing this information, the Minister also informed how these trips have helped strengthen bilateral relations and have allowed other countries to understand India’s perspective on various issues.

Prime Minister’s interactions during his visits abroad have enhanced understanding of India’s perspectives on bilateral, regional and global issues by other countries, and have strengthened our relations with them across a wide range of sectors including trade and investment, technology, maritime, space, defence collaboration and people to people contact. These, in turn, have contributed to India’s national development agenda to promote economic growth and wellbeing of our people,” the Minister stated as mentioned in an MEA statement.

India is now increasingly contributing to shaping the global agenda at the multilateral level including on climate change, transnational crime and terrorism, cybersecurity and nuclear non-proliferation, and offering to the world its own unique initiatives for global issues like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure,” he added.

The last trip that the Prime Minister took was to Brazil, on November 13 and November 14, to attend the BRICS summit. However, he did not travel anywhere in 2020 because of the lockdown announced earlier this year, in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.
