European countries hit by the Coronavirus pandemic are recovering slowly. Many are already working to revitalise the tourism industry, one of the worst-affected by the lockdowns and other restrictions. The latest initiative to help rebuild tourists’ confidence about their safety has been launched by the tourism authority of Portugal. By Manya Saini
Turismo de Portugal has launched a ‘Clean & Safe’ stamp to certify tourist hotspots and hospitality businesses that are complying with the health and hygiene guidelines. The move is aimed at helping the recovery of the tourism industry by helping build back confidence of tourists.

Businesses complying with the measures will get the certificate that will remain valid for a year from the date of issuing. As per reports, the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) of Portugal has said that maintaining the approved standards of sanitation will help tourists and locals avoid the risk of the virus spreading again.
The tourism body has further expressed its intention of expanding the certification to other areas such as museums, public parks, and monuments. It has said to ensure that all these places are following the directives required under the stamp certification; it will conduct random audits regularly.
The primary intention behind the initiative according to the tourism authority is promoting Portugal as a safe destination by publicising the hygiene standards operating in the country.

Earlier this month, it had changed its official #CantSkipPortugal tagline to #CantSkipHope in solidarity with the world, in a show of hope that the world will get through these difficult times. The initiative was made to give out the message that this is the time to pause, refocus, and lend a hand in the efforts so that all of us can cope together.
Many countries have come up with similar positive campaigns and certificates geared towards reviving and rejuvenating tourism without compromising on the safety of travellers.
