Called the Earth Shot Prize, the new environmental award will contain five prizes that amount to one million pounds. The five prizes will be awarded each year for the next 10 years, enabling at least 50 solutions to some of the world’s greatest environmental problems by 2030. The Duke of Cambridge, who has been actively involved in dealing with environmental issues said, “We have 10 years to fundamentally fix our planet” (as reported on Sky News).

The judging panel will include Prince William and other leading figures from the worlds of entertainment, environment, business, sports and philanthropy. The first five Earth Shots will focus on restoring and preserving clean air, nature, fixing the climate, building a waste-free world and reviving oceans.

“We very much hope that even if we can’t necessarily change the world in 10 years’ time just from the prize alone, what we do hope is that, just like the Moonshot landings where they developed cat scanners, X-ray machines, breathing apparatus, stuff like that I think has been really, really important to come out of that,” said Prince William (as reported on Firstpost).

Nominations for the prestigious Nobel-like awards begin on November 1, which will then culminate in an annual awards function that will be held in different cities each year, starting with London in 2021. The prize will be funded by bigwigs and the project’s global Allan founding partners including Alibaba’s Jack Ma, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and Michael Bloomberg.
